Alaska Airlines announced on Wednesday it would add a nonstop route to Kona on the "Big Island" of Hawaii.
Beginning March 5, Alaska Airlines will begin flying three nonstop flights a week between the cities on Boeing 737 aircraft. The new route comes as Alaska Airlines has beefed up its presence in recent years at both San Diego and Kona.
"We're growing and adding flights in important West Coast markets to give our customers more opportunities to explore the great places we fly," Joe Sprague, the airline's senior VP of communications and external relations, says in a statement. "We are thrilled to bring the white sand beaches, black lava fields and unique Polynesian culture of Kona and Hawaii's Big Island to our San Diego customers."
With the new Kona service, Alaska Airlines will fly nonstop to 16 cities from San Diego. The others are Boise; Boston; Fresno; Honolulu; Kahului (Maui), Hawaii; Lihue (Kauai), Hawaii; Los Cabos, Mexico; Mammoth Lakes, Calif.; Monterey, Calif.; Salt Lake City; Santa Rosa, Calif.; Seattle; Orlando, Portland, Ore.; and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
Alaska Airlines also has been expanding its presence in Hawaii this decade. In Kona, Alaska says it now offers 74 weekly, peak-season flights between Kona and Anchorage; Oakland; Portland, Ore; San Diego; San Jose, Calif.; and Seattle.
