The U.S. Department of Transportation has launched a website designed to keep potential cruisers informed of any safety or consumer complaint concerns onboard cruise ships sailing into and out of U.S. ports of call.
The site includes contact information for agencies with direct jurisdiction over the cruise industry: Federal Maritime Commission (for consumer complaints) and the U.S. Coast Guard (for ship safety issues and criminal incidents).
"We are committed to providing the traveling public with as much information as possible to make informed decisions about their travel and making sure they know their rights before, during and after their trip," U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said in a prepared statement.
Foxx also referenced Senator John D. Rockefeller IV, the chairman of the Senate's Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, in his comments. Rockefeller has continually said the cruise industry distorts its safety records. The new website was one of many actions called for by Rockefeller during two Senate hearings on cruise ship safety over the past two years.
