German airline Lufthansa has cancelled 84 long-haul flights today because of a pilot strike.
Around 20,000 passengers will be affected by the action, even though 90 flights will still depart as planned.
The pilots union, Vereinigung Cockpit, has said it will extend its strike to include medium- and short-haul flights on Wednesday. Lufthansa's 5,400 pilots want the company to keep paying a transition payment for those wanting to retire early, and are opposed to a restructuring of the airline.
Lufthansa says passengers should check its website, www.lh.com, for details of forthcoming flight cancellations.
If your flight is cancelled, European regulations require airlines to offer either a full refund of the unused parts of your tickets, or to re-route you to your destination, as soon as possible, said Nick Trend, our consumer advice editor.
If a flight is cancelled at short notice, you may also be due €250 each under EU Regulation 261/2004 to help defray the extra expenses, adds Gill Charlton our consumer advice specialist.
This amount must be paid by the airline.
